Over-thinking about Dota

United States Minor Outlying Islands
Hello my name is Alex. I've been playing dota since the wc3 mod when I was eight but I took breaks in between because I didn't have a lot of friends that played dota my age. I recently got back into it when dota 2 first came out and began playing it seriously. Now a lot of my friends play it and I question a lot of things because of the points they bring up. So here's my question.

When I play dota I never thought of the idea of a hero being good or bad, I just believe that you pick a hero and play it to the best of your abilities. I always believed that there are no such thing as a bad item, it just depends how you use it. For example: I especially love Lothars (Shadow Blade) but all I ever hear from my friends is that it's a trash item and should never be used.

So is there really such a mind set where certain patches there are good and bad heroes/items? Sure there are better heroes that win games easier than most and items that are buffed with new updates to be better, but I've always thought of all heroes and items to be good depending how you play with them.
