black bars on side of screen

My native resolution is 1440x900
and when I set my in game resolution to 640x480 it just strech on whole screen
so I need help
I want black bars on side and normaln 640x480 resolution
and btw I have win7 / ATI Radeon 4550HD and LG Flatron L192WS

It usually no matter with the graphic card
For many monitors on the market it has the function to set them to 4:3 resolution
You just need to check on your monitor's option board and find is there a option like "image size" or "display mode"
that kind of things   if there is, it will automatically be changed to 4:3

if there is no that option, there are ways to set your display space on your screen, either to set your graphic card or on your monitor driver
but that is really complicated.
